When our ancestors started to settle down, cultivate farmland and grow cattle, they started worrying about preserving their newly found wealth and protecting it from greedy neighbours and later, from kings and their tax officers. That is why trusts developed to become familiar: crusaders entrusted their family wealth to trusted friends, and upon return from the journey, then received it back. If they were killed during the crusade, the trustee would look after the family wealth in the best interest of the family.

Not a lot has changed since then, has it?
